We can't say a "vie en rose" after seeing the movie Judy about the mother of Liza Minelli, the big star Judy Garland. In this film from director Rupert Goold, we see the last and quite tragic years of the life of this phenomenal star. Equally phenomenal are the performances of Renée Zellweger, well known to us from "Bridget Jones's Diary". Where Zellweger plays a somewhat plump, cheerful blonde in Bridget Jones, she sparkles in this role as the bone-thin Garland, addicted to alcohol and pills. It is a truly and dazzling achievement. We see a jerky moving and bent Judy that touches the heart deeply. Above all, Zellweger sings herself. Diving into the skin of a celebrity is one thing, but being a world famous singer and singing yourself is a very big achievement.
It is no small task to turn a warm spring type (sorry technically speaking) with long blond hair into a woman with short dark hair and brown eyes (contact lenses) and to make her really shine.
The costume designer opted for beautiful authentic bijoux and jewelry from the 1950s, but the beautiful fabrics used in her tops and jackets are truly dazzling.
I predict a revival of the 50’s and an Oscar for Zellweger, but especially for Jany Temime (= both French and Dutch!) who was responsible for the costume design. Well deserved to my opinion!!
