How much of a baby is this baby girl, you might wonder? Not at all. I was a bit hesitant at first, but Nicole Kidman shines in the role of Romy, a top manager, under the direction of none other than Halina Reijn. Spoiler alert: The following text contains details about the story or its ending.
As a female top manager, life is not easy, even in today’s world. Wherever shots can be fired, the men often still can’t resist.
“She slept her way to the top” (a woman who enjoys sex or is simply beautiful). An older woman in leadership? (Past her prime). A sensitive woman? (Always on her period). A blonde woman? (Not quite smart enough). A decisive woman? (Always grumpy). A strong woman? (Clearly doesn’t like sex). A woman with prominent lips? (Has a horse face). A well-dressed woman? (Always shopping). If she’s the breadwinner as a top manager, she’s certainly not a loving mother.
And if we see her driving a Porsche, it must either belong to her husband, or she obtained it dishonestly. It can’t be otherwise.
This baby girl, however, refuses to be dismissed. As a manager, she operates with love, intelligence, approachability, integrity, and sharpness. She dedicates ample time to her well-being, from EMDR sessions to process her challenging childhood to oxygen treatments and a few Botox injections for those crow’s feet.
Still, an innocent-looking intern (Harris Dickinson as Samuel) finds her Achilles’ heel. With cunning and devious schemes, he brings her to her knees. He infiltrates her colleagues and even shows up unannounced at her family home. But Romy stands firm—and so does her husband (Antonio Banderas). More than firm, I’d say.
Naturally, rumors spread within the company. When a male colleague invites her for “a quick drink” (his wife isn’t home), she replies, without batting an eye: “If I wanted to be humiliated, I’d hire someone for that.”
Kidman shines as always. Having started on school stages, she has long since become a global star with unmatched allure. She gives a stellar performance and glides across the screen like a gazelle with her extraordinarily beautiful, long legs. Eyes wide open, I’d say.
For her wardrobe (costume design by Kurt and Bart), an undeniable ten out of ten. The choice is for an ultra-feminine, tailored aesthetic. Perfectly cut blouses, fitted skirts and dresses, high heels, a bag from Valentino, and, above all, don’t miss the stunning Max Mara coats. They are nothing short of breathtaking.
Kidman is now focusing on working with female directors. Halina has made her mark. We wait in joyful anticipation.
